Active Learning Online: Using Synchronous Time to Engage Students

Convener: Professors Kim Bowes, Classical Studies, Florian Schwarz, Linguistics and Doris Wagner, Biology

This discussion will explore ways to run live sessions with our students as we teach online in the fall. Kim Bowes of Classical Studies, Florian Schwarz of Linguistics and Doris Wagner of Biology will discuss how they have organized synchronous class time to emphasize students’ active learning. We will consider ways to lead a class using structured activities to help facilitate students’ thinking and engagement with course concepts and each other, while enabling instructors to provide guidance and feedback. Considering approaches that can be used for larger classes, the conversation will be relevant for faculty interested active learning, SAIL (Structured Active In-class Learning), the flipped classroom or simply alternatives to lecturing in the online format.

This session is now full. For those who cannot attend, we will record the presentation (though not small group discussions) and make that available at https://ctl.upenn.edu/workshops-prepare-teaching-remotely. Please allow about a week for us to get the recording online.
