Beyond Lecturing: Incorporating Active Learning

Facilitator: Sherelle Ferguson, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Sociology
Convener: Professor Courtney Boen, Sociology

What kinds of learning opportunities can we provide students in a course with no lectures? Research on active learning has shown that using strategies that engage students as participants in their learning during class time increases their learning and retention of what they learn. This session will provide graduate students with a set of activities and ideas that they can translate into their own classes or recitations to motivate students and help students learn critical thinking and interpersonal skills.

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Sociology department and so may be most useful to students in related fields.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
