Bringing the Art of Language into Disciplinary Learning

Facilitator: Professor Nelson Flores, Educational Linguistics
Convener: Elizabeth Dunens, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Education

This workshop seeks to explore the implications of bringing the art of language into disciplinary learning in higher education as an approach to analyzing texts as well as of interpreting the language practices that students bring into our classrooms. The goal of a classroom that adopts this approach would no longer be to master standard or academic language but to experiment with linguistic techniques in ways that transcend homogenous linguistic categories through a focus on choice and style—that is, through a focus on the art of language.

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Education department and so may be most useful to students in related fields.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
