Combating Anti-Blackness in the College Classroom

Facilitator: Davy Knittle, CETLI Graduate Fellow, English
Convener: Dr. Stephanie Jones, Dept. of Education, Grinnell College

This workshop focuses on promoting teaching in literature and writing classes that is explicit about manifestations of anti-Black racism, and which affirms Black life through syllabus and assignment design and the development of classroom community. We will focus on approaches to classroom facilitation and mentoring that affirm Black students, and we will also focus on how literature and writing instructors committed to combating anti-Black racism in the university can support students beyond the classroom. Additionally, we will discuss how to address anti-Black comments, and how to approach anti-Black university policies and practices in classroom conversations. We will discuss the racialized distribution of emotional and logistical labor in universities, and focus on the particular challenges that the current remote format introduces to the project of building community within and outside the classroom to sustain the work of refusing and transforming institutional cultures of anti-Blackness. While this workshop is geared toward English and writing instructors, all are welcome to attend.

This workshop counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
