Creating a Classroom Discussion That Includes All Voices

Convener: Ava Creemers, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Linguistics

This workshop discusses the challenge of creating a classroom discussion that includes all voices. Too often, discussions end up being conversations between the teacher and a handful of extroverted students. The workshop discusses reasons why students may refrain from speaking up, as well as concrete class discussion strategies that can be used to ensure that all of our students have the opportunity to be heard. The workshop is premised on the idea that a good class discussion doesn’t just share distinct ideas; it also shares distinct voices.
