How to Give Feedback to Your Students

Convener: Abigail Dym, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Political Science

TAs are well-positioned to provide thoughtful feedback to students to help them grow in class and beyond as lifelong, open-minded learners. Feedback sticks best when TAs have established a culture of trust which often stems from: clear expectations on assignments and participation; inclusive classrooms that show the practice of giving and receiving feedback; and opportunities to feel successful after receiving and implementing feedback. This workshop will discuss how to best approach giving students feedback on formative assignments and participation with an eye towards the possibility for student growth. We will consider methods for building inclusive and trusting classrooms and creating intentional spaces where feedback occurs; formats of feedback; and how to differentiate for students based on their learning preferences and the nature of the assignment. This is applicable to all disciplines and your unique experience will be welcomed as we all reflect and learn together.

TA Training Follow Up Workshop (for new TAs in SAS). All graduate students are welcome.
Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
