Inclusive and equitable teaching, starting on the first day of class
Facilitator: Professor Margo Brooks-Carthon, Nursing
Convener: Stacey Bevan, CTL Graduate Fellow, Nursing
The first day of class leaves a lasting impression that sets a tone for the rest of the semester. Join Dr. Margo Brooks-Carthon for a reflection on inclusivity and equity when designing and introducing course syllabi. Using example documents, we will define these terms and discuss strategies to create positive learning environments for all students. We will also discuss diversity statements as living documents that evolve over time. Lunch will be provided!
Objectives:
- Define inclusive and equitable teaching
- Discuss diversity statements and philosophies and how they evolve with teaching experience
- Practice designing course materials that center inclusivity and equity
All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the School of Nursing and so may be most useful to students in related fields.
Counts toward the CTL Teaching Certificate.
