Inclusive Teaching Through Active Learning

Convener: Professors Kelly Hogan, Biology, University of North Carolina and Viji Sathy, Psychology and Neuroscience, University of North Carolina

Teaching strategies that emphasize structured active learning can create more equitable classrooms and improve learning for all students. In this interactive presentation, Professors Kelly Hogan and Viji Sathy of the University of North Carolina will explore inclusive techniques that can be used with any discipline or class size. Drawing upon their own teaching experiences and educational research, they will discuss and model approaches that can be readily implemented and help all of our students better achieve to their potentials.

Hogan and Sathy are both award-winning professors at UNC. Hogan is STEM Teaching Associate Professor of Biology and Assistant Dean of Instructional Innovation; Sathy is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, and Program Evaluator for the Chancellor’s Science Scholars. They have expertise on inclusive techniques and active learning in any size class: both teach courses with hundreds of students, engage in research around teaching and learning, and lead innovative classroom and diversity initiatives on their campus.
