Integrating Your Research Project(s) into Courses

Facilitator: Professor Diana Mutz, Communication
Convener: Tyler Leigh, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Communication

Academics often face a trade-off between our teaching and our research, being (or feeling) forced to prioritize one over the other. In this session, Annenberg Professor Diana Mutz will share her experience balancing this trade-off by integrating her teaching with her research.  Dr. Mutz has designed undergraduate and graduate courses that are centered around a semester-long research project that the class engages in together, eventually resulting in a publication. This format of teaching through research engages students in the practice of knowledge production and provides opportunities to apply the concepts and skills learned in class. In this session, we will discuss the costs and benefits of designing a class like this, how to design a class that integrates your research with your teaching, and  many other insights from Prof. Mutz’s experience!

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Communication department and so may be most useful to students in related fields.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
