DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) statements have become a common requirement on the job market, and there’s more focus than ever before on inclusive and equitable practices at an institutional level. But for new instructors, it can be difficult to translate from these high-minded ideals to concrete behaviors in the classroom. In this session, participants will discuss how the three concepts of “diversity,” “equity,” and “inclusion” relate to each other, and how they can inform our pedagogical strategies on a day-to-day basis. We will identify some of the common barriers that students face to equal access in the classroom, and brainstorm ways that we can foster a more inclusive environment. This session will focus in particular on the agency we have as graduate students to make our classrooms into welcoming spaces for diverse learners, as well as on the campus support systems that students can take advantage of.
