Motivating Your Students to Care About Your Course

Convener: Joe Cooke, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Mechanical & Applied Engineering

Everyone can recall taking a required class and not feeling driven by the material because it didn’t align with their passion directly. As teaching assistants, we can help the students see the connection between their interests and the material in the class through examples, applications and proposed problems which can help students thrive in class. Additionally, we can find ways to show students why our required materials matter for their larger aims. In this workshop, we discuss how to learn your students’ interests and to develop lesson plans that demonstrate why students should be excited about your class’s materials.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate. Also counts as a follow-up workshop for SAS participants in TA Training.
