Multi-Modal Classroom Assignments and Assessments

Facilitator: Professor John Jackson, Dean, Annenberg School for Communication
Convener: Tyler Leigh, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Communication

Many classes rely solely on written assignments and assessments to reinforce and assess student learning. In this CETLI session, Dean Jackson of the Annenberg School will share his experience using multi-modal (i.e. non-written; think podcast, meme, or documentary film) assessments in class. We will talk about how multi-modal assignments can promote a more inclusive learning environment, do better at reinforcing learning than traditional written assignments, and add some fun and excitement to grading our students’ work. Dean Jackson will talk about his experience designing courses with multi-modal assessments and how we might do the same for our own courses.

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Communication department and so may be most useful to students in related fields.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
