Preparing Students for Exams in STEM Fields
Facilitator: Jesse Hanlan, CTL Graduate Fellow, Physics & Astronomy
For students, STEM classes can often feel like drinking from a fire hose. Topics come quickly, and students can have a hard time keeping up with new material, retaining previous content, or synthesizing connections between subjects. When it comes time for an exam, students may feel the need to make up for lost time by cramming, emphasizing memorization over long term learning. In this workshop we will develop a variety of strategies to alleviate these issues. We will discuss how to emphasize themes in course content to facilitate student synthesis. We will also address how we as instructors can encourage consistent study habits and help students identify core concepts.
