Teaching Non-Majors

Convener: McFeely Jackson Goodman, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Mathematics

How do we motivate students from other departments? How do we make connections to their areas of study? How can we teach them effectively in light of their different backgrounds and different ways of communicating ideas? How do we share the best strategies for learning in our fields? How do we point them to the best resources from our field? And how do we bring our ideas to the widest possible audience? We will discuss these issues and more as we discuss how best to teach students who are outside of their home department (as well as those who don’t have one yet). These are students who need the skills of your class for another discipline, who are filling requirements, or exploring the university in true liberal arts fashion. We will trade experiences, challenges, and solutions from the point of view of our various departments.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate. Also counts as a follow-up workshop for SAS participants in TA Training.
