We experience the world through our bodies. Although much of academic socialization insists that graduate student-workers and undergraduates ignore our corporeality, lived experiences and emotions, the coronavirus pandemic has shown the impact of embodied experiences: including loneliness, hunger, homelessness, undocumented status and illness on student well-being and academic performance. This awareness has underscored the ways that social justice movements have long called attention to the body as an important site of navigating power, identity, and social reality. This workshop will consider the value of making space for student and instructor bodies in the classroom and explore strategies instructors can deploy to help students whose lived experiences make it hard for them to be fully present in the classroom.
