Social media has shown us new ways to connect to global publics while also presenting new harms for students such as doxing, trolling, and exposure to harmful mis- and disinformation. Instructors have made effective use of social media as both an object of our class lessons or a tool for assignments. Social media can also be used to facilitate discussion, coordinate collaborative and creative projects, and as a backchannel for students to connect with one another. This workshop will consider how and when it is appropriate to use social media in the classroom for lessons, assignments, and communication and when it may become an added distraction. We’ll go through some best case and worst case examples and brainstorm new ideas to take with you as you develop your future syllabi and lesson plans.
Please register in case circumstances necessitate moving the workshop to Zoom.
