Writing Challenging and Exciting Assignments in STEM Fields

Convener: Matt DeCross, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Physics

How do we bridge the gap from the classroom chalkboard to the professional practice of STEM? Homework assignments and projects are often the main arenas in which students have a chance to gain practical experience, consolidate their knowledge, and stretch their capabilities, so they are an important area for instructors to focus on in course development. This workshop will guide instructors through the process of assignment creation with an eye towards innovation, challenge, and inspiration. We will discuss the ideation process for assignments, what distinguishes exciting/challenging assignments from bland/mundane assignments, how we can use assignments to motivate students to pursue our fields, and more.
